A good wardrobe will not only consist of quality clothing, but will also be well maintained.

Like the rest of your house, your closet requires attention to be kept in top shape. Luckily it doesn't require much. Minimum effort and time on an ongoing basis is enough to keep it looking slick.

We're not suggesting your wardrobe has to look like a boutique store, but a well cared for wardrobe is likely to pay dividends by ensuring your clothes and accessories stay in the best possible condition.

Wardrobes can vary in size and space quite a lot, and its safe to stay we could all do with a little extra room. Unfortunately, the cost to increase the size of your wardrobe can be quite high. So we'll have to settle with what we have available. Here are some tips on maximising your space and keeping your wardrobe clean and tidy.

Clear It Out

Your wardrobe can pile up quickly, making it a struggle to flick through your shirts and suits. Rather than doing a massive clear out once a year, we suggest you constantly monitor what's in your wardrobe and get rid of the pieces you don't wear.

As a general rule, remove anything you haven't worn in the past year. It's highly unlikely you'll be wearing it again. If the thought of throwing out all these pieces hurts, try selling them on eBay.

Storage

If space is tight remove anything that can be folded; T-Shirts and Polos can easily be folded and stored in drawers. Suits, jackets, shirts and trousers should always be carefully hung on the correct hangers, with appropriate spacing between each. Pay particular attention to your suits and jackets, which require thicker hangers to keep their shape.

We also suggest investing in some basic cleaning products, like lint rollers. They'll help remove any dust that may have settled whilst resting in your wardrobe. Good hangers are essential and may require you to spend a little bit of money. Thin wooden hangers are perfect for shirts, whilst thicker hangers should be used for suits, sport jackets and outerwear.

You may also want to invest in a shoe rack. A collection of good quality shoes can be expensive, and therefore its important you care for them. A shoe rack will ensure you store them correctly, as opposed to throwing them at the bottom of your wardrobe.
