History
The pocket square has a long history that dates back to 500 B.C., where the wealthy English and French men would carry perfumed hankies in their jacket pocket to help mask the stench of the streets as they went about town. Come the 1900's no man would leave the house without a pocket square.
Despite being produced in cotton, linen or silk. Silk is the primary choice of material for the modern pocket square. Your plain white pocket square is always a safe choice, and will work with almost any shirt and tie combination. The Menzclub man is a little more confident than the average, and thus your pocket square should express just some (not all) of your personality. Experiment with various colours, textures and patterns.
Matching your tie and pocket square ultimately comes down to personal taste. Whilst there are no rules, as a general guideline your pocket square should match some colours in either your shirt or tie. Your tie and pocket square need not match exactly, but rather compliment one another.
Matching tie and pocket square sets are available, but can sometimes look a little to "try-hard". We suggest to wear these matching sets with caution, and only with plain coloured dress shirts.
Pocket Square Folds
There is no wrong or right way to fold a pocket square, and we suggest you don't stick to just one type of fold either. Here are our top 3 folds.
Straight Fold
- Lay your pocket square flat on the table.
- Fold it in half, bringing the left side over to the right side.
- Bring the bottom just below the top.
- Fold the pocket square in thirds horizontally so that it can fit inside your jacket pocket.
One Point
- Lay your pocket square flat on the table.
- Fold the pocket square in half, so that the bottom corner meets the top corner. You should now have a triangle.
- Fold the left corner to the centre and the right corner to the centre. You should now have a long rectangle with a point at the top.
- Gently place inside your jacket pocket.
Puff Fold
- Lay your pocket square flat on the table.
- Pinch the middle of the pocket square, allowing the folds to come in naturally.
- With one hand holding the pocket square, use the other to gather it together and tuck the sides in.
- Gently place inside your jacket pocket.
